It's great to meet you! I'm Joseph Warren, the editor and publisher of "The BOSS" e-Newsletter. I'm also the CEO of You And Me Enterprises.

Some 4 years ago, my fiancé, Janet, and I decided to have a part-time business. You And Me Enterprises was born, but it didn't begin with the idea of helping other businesses. Instead it was a distribution company and we distributed merchandise to retail stores. Naturally, with the Internet becoming so popular, we had to build a website.

As life sometimes throws us "Gear Changers", we ended up helping many of our customers build their business. You see, our customers loved our website and wanted us to build one for them. So we began offering website design. So much for a part-time business. This gear changer turned into a full time business.

Similarly, our customers loved our catalogs which happened to be our own design. So we began designing custom catalogs. And the same thing happened with brochures and business cards. We decided to market our marketing and promotional material designs as another way of generating revenue.

While we had quite a bit of work coming in and several income streams, naturally, we couldn't possibly offer everything to our everybody. But within our customer base, we had many different types of businesses and we began networking them together. One of our customers would need advertising banners and, as it turned out, we have a customer that prints advertising banners, so we "hooked" them up with each other. The fancy name for this is networking.

Our customer base is only so big though and I soon had to begin searching for solutions to my customers needs - their requests. "Hey Joe, " they'd ask. "My products aren't moving. I can't seem to figure out how to increase foot traffic. Any ideas?" The same happened online. "My website's not making any money. What can I do? Teach me how to make money online, Joe."

And that's what "The BOSS" is about. This site is the result of many hours of research and learning on my part.

A couple of years ago the Internet underwent a tremendous "Gear Changer". While it started out as a communication means, it's become a melting pot of people just like you trying to find a way of increasing or supplementing their income.

Two turning points have gotten the Internet to where it is right now.

• First, economic surges, its ups and downs,  have created a desire for people to be their own boss. They have a burning desire to make money. They're tired of working for someone else, or they're just not earning enough. And so they turn to the Internet to find this wealth.
  
  
• Second, with more and more people turning to the Internet, regular brick-and-mortar businesses - those businesses that operate primarily offline - have had to "hang their shingle" online. That is, they've had to build a website in order to compete. Janet and I have speculated often between us that, by the year 2005 or 2006, if you don't have a website, you'll be a nobody in the business arena. Honestly, it's the way advertising is going.
  
  

With these turning points, new marketing techniques have to be established for promoting online. Spam laws, while they help keep things more structured, also create the need for having stricter guidelines to follow. "List Building" - a marketing maneuver that's ever-growing in popularity - is the result of spam and the laws that were created to curb it.

You, as a Business Owner advertising and marketing online, need to become familiar with such practices as List Building, Niche and Target Marketing online (which is just enough different than offline that even the big companies lose money before they get the hang of it), and online Business Management.
